Wombat Said Come In

About the Book

Wombat Said Come In by Carmen Agra Deedy, illustrated by Brian Lies, is a warm and humorous picture book about kindness, friendship and helping others during a crisis. When an Australian bushfire threatens the animals around him, Wombat opens his underground home to frightened neighbours seeking shelter.

A Story of Kindness and Hospitality

One by one, Wallaby, Kookaburra, Platypus, Koala and Sugar Glider arrive at Wombat's door. Although his peaceful burrow soon becomes crowded and chaotic, Wombat continues to offer them a safe place to stay. The story shows how generosity can make a difference when others are in need.

Friendship, Nature and Community

Set against the Australian bushfire season, the story introduces young readers to Australian animals while exploring friendship, environmental challenges, community and compassion. Brian Lies's detailed illustrations bring Wombat's underground home and the surrounding Australian landscape to life.
