The Hills of the Dead

About the Book

The Hills of the Dead by Robert E. Howard is a classic supernatural adventure featuring Solomon Kane, the Puritan swordsman and wanderer. The story takes Kane into the African wilderness, where an encounter with his old acquaintance N'Longa provides him with a mysterious magical staff before he continues deeper into the jungle.

As Kane travels through the wilderness, he discovers an ancient city inhabited by vampires. The story combines exploration, supernatural horror, sword-and-sorcery adventure and the mysterious atmosphere of the African jungle.

Solomon Kane and the Supernatural

The Hills of the Dead is one of Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane stories and was first published in Weird Tales in August 1930. The story places Kane against supernatural forces while maintaining the fast-paced adventure style associated with Howard's pulp fiction.

The combination of wilderness exploration, ancient evil, vampires and Kane's determination makes the story an early example of supernatural adventure and dark fantasy.
