Our American Holidays

About the Book

Our American Holidays by Robert Haven Schauffler is a historical anthology exploring the origins, traditions and cultural meaning of major American holidays. First published as part of a series of books on American holidays, it brings together historical writings, poetry, religious material and other selections connected with the celebrations.

American Holidays and Their Traditions

The book examines how American holidays developed and how their traditions have been understood and celebrated. It covers holidays and commemorations including Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Independence Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, and the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Rather than presenting holidays simply as dates on a calendar, Schauffler brings together material that reflects the historical events, customs and ideas associated with them. The collection provides a glimpse into American cultural traditions and the way holiday observances evolved over time.

Historical and Cultural Context

The anthology combines historical documents with prose and verse, making it useful for readers interested in American history, traditions and cultural heritage. It also reflects the period in which the original work was compiled, offering historical perspective on how these celebrations were understood in the early twentieth century.
