I Am a Cat: Volume One by Natsume Soseki

What if you could see the world through the eyes of a cat who understands human nature better than the humans themselves? I Am a Cat: Volume One by Natsume Soseki is a celebrated Japanese literary classic, presented in a fresh English translation by Nick Bradley.

The story follows an unnamed stray kitten adopted by a local scholar in Meiji-era Japan. Living in the scholar’s household, the cat becomes a sharp-eyed observer of the people around him, watching their habits, conversations, ambitions and everyday absurdities.

With dry humour and a wonderfully sardonic voice, the feline narrator exposes the contradictions and pretensions of upper-middle-class society. Ordinary domestic scenes become opportunities for witty commentary on human behaviour, social conventions and the complexities of life.

Translated by Nick Bradley, this edition introduces new readers to Soseki’s enduring satire while offering classic literature enthusiasts a fresh way to experience one of Japan’s most iconic novels. It is an engaging choice for readers who enjoy literary fiction, Japanese classics, animal narrators and thoughtful social commentary.
